Comparison of United Nations with the League Of Nations

Comparison of United Nations with the League Of Nations

The United Nations was formed to keep the peace and security of the world, while the League of Nations failed to stop wars. The UN learned from the League’s mistakes and fixed them in its own institutions, which made it stronger and easier to get in touch with.

League Of Nations

“The League of Nations was a brilliant and costly experiment, not unlike a brilliant and costly scientific experiment.”

William Howard Taft, former U.S. President and League of Nations proponent.

League Of Nations was setup in 1920 after WORLD WAR

1. The “Covenant” of the League of Nations incorporated the idea of a contract for peace agreed by the winning powers at the end of the first global conflict in 1919.

2- US didn’t joined it despite the fact that Wilson’s 14 point was the main foundation in its creation.it was joined by USSR very late around 1934.it was mainly dominated by Britain and FRANCE.

3- League’s covenant which was drawn by USA, Britain and France, as Russia was not invited to the TREATY OF VERSAILLES.

4- The League Of Nation’s took many decisions which was based on unanimity principles. that’s what became a reason for frequent statement.

5- In League OF Nations the colonies or the developing countries during that period do not have any voice in the League.

6-It was not joined by all the nations, or membership was not accepted by major super powers during that period like USA, so it was not a true representative of all the nations.

7- The voting process in the League’s Security Council had to be unanimous.

8- The permanent members of League Of Nations Council were France, Britain, Japan and Italy. The numbers of non permanent members were 9 by 1926 which was four in 1920 when the League was created. they were elected for a period of three years.

Conclusion

 UN and LEAGUE OF NATIONS

If we will have to summarize UN and LEAGUE OF NATIONS, we will find that UN has been more successful than the League, because UN has devoted more time and money in socio economic development work. Also the scope of US is much wider than that of the League. all specialized agencies of UN were established after 1945 except ILO.UN has been able to take decisions due to change in procedures as UNGA does not need unanimous vote. Also UNSC veto can be overruled by UNGA as per the UNITING FOR PEACE RESOLUTION OF 1950 during Korean War-USSR was boycotting the UNSC due to non admission of communist China. thus, UNGA was consulted and it passed the aggression, the General Assembly shall consider the matter immediately with a view to making appropriate recommendations to Member States for collective measures, including in the case of a breach of the peace or act of aggression, recommendations for collective action in the form of sanctions or intervention to maintain or restore international peace and security.”

So, This resolution aimed to enhance the UN’s ability to respond to crises when the Security Council was unable to act.
